Rockstar Mohawk

You've been telling me you wanted a mohawk so here it is. You've worn a mohawk for about the last 2 weeks. The 1st week the hair was cornrowed straight up into the mohawk & the 2nd week it was redone, we'll talk about that later.

I washed and throughly detangled your hair & then started my style. I parted your hair slightly off the middle (more to the side than the middle). I then used my metal rat tail comb to part your hair for the cornrows.

I continued parting and cornrowing until I was at the bottom.

I then moved to the other side of your head parted slightly off center and parted and cornrowed that side.

Once I was done I separated the hair that was left out into 3-4 sections and braided them.

The next morning I took out the 3-4 braids which left you with a cute braidout mohawk style.

The picture below was taken while I was still working on it. I don't have a finished picture-sorry.

The next week I wanted to switch it up a bit. So, I did a criss-cross cornrow style. To do this I parted the hair down the middle and tied off one side. Everything is the same except that for the criss cross. Instead of cornrowing from hairline to crown I cornrowed halfway up, lifted and braided regularly, then crossed that over to the parted section beside it and cornrowed it with that hair, up into the crown. It seems confusing, I know. But looking at the pictures, it should make sense.

Once I finished cornrowing each side I then sectioned off the left out hair and braided for a braidout for the next day.

The reason I parted the hair to the side and not down the middle on the first style is because your hair isn't that thick and I wanted a lot of hair in the middle. You can see the difference in the second style when I did part your hair down the middle.

Birthday Hair: Flexirod Set

For your Birthday party today I wanted to do your first flexirod set. I probably should have tried it out before today just to see if I would like it or not. I wasn't completely happy with the results we got but everyone said you looked cute. The curls were not as elongated as I'd hoped and didn't fall like I'd hoped. I think I should have gotten bigger rods. But I think with more practice we'll find a way of rolling them so that we will  really love the results.

How we did it:
I washed and detangled your hair. I didn't band or braid your hair to stretch it because I knew the flexirods would stretch it enough. I also rolled it wet because your hair isn't that thick and because you would be wearing them overnight. Once I finished detangling your hair I sectioned it off with my fingers into about 1 inch sections. I applied Eco Styler Gel to the section and then combed with a fine toothed comb to distribute the product evenly. I curled the ends of your hair around the flexirod a few times to hold it in place (pictured below).
Wrap some hair around the ends to secure.

I then spiral curled it up pulling it down toward the floor at an angle. I left a small space as I curled the hair to try to help elongate the curl (pictured below).

This picture was taken the day after your party. Normally the hair would be as smooth as possible for rolling.

Once I finished rolling your hair I didn't touch it (or let you touch it) and you went to sleep on a satin pillow case.

The next morning I took the flexirods out. Sorry I don't have a picture of your hair right after taking them out but we were on a time crunch to get to the party. Before separating them I dipped my fingertips in some E.V.O.O. (Extra Virgin Olive Oil) to help smooth the hair so not to create frizz and hoping it would help weigh the hair down some. I separated each curl into about 3-6 curls depending on the size of the section. To finish I just fluffed your roots and added a headband and flower!
This was your hair after a day of bowling, playing arcade games and riding your new scooter.
I think it looks good and is nice and shiny!

To try to maintain your curls you slept with your hair pulled up in a high pony with an ouchless holder. I didn't worry about smoothing your hair into the pony because I didn't want to destroy the curl. I also didn't wrap the pony holder, I just put it on there so it doesn't create a dent in the hair.

Hopefully the curls will hold up through the night and maybe even fall a little!

Before and After

I want to post some before and after pictures of you. These are just before proper hair care and after. Sorry about the quality of these pictures. They were taken with my phone and with my webcam. My camera is broken but I promise I will be buying a new one soon and the pictures will be much better!

These are your before pics. As you can see your hair is frizzy, dull and looks dry.

This is you after a braid out. Your hair is moisturized fluffy and looks beautiful, Just like you!

The Beginning

Since you will soon be celebrating your 4th Birthday I thought I would officially start my blog. I want to show your journey of growing natural. I have just recently learned how to properly take care of your hair and I'm still learning new things every day. I will be posting pictures of different styles that we try, doing monthly growth checks, giving my opinions on products that we use and more. I hope that one day you look back on this and realize how beautiful you and your curls are and you love and cherish them. I love you!
